Separate guest access from network administration

At a hospitality business, guests need easy access, while network equipment and settings should remain restricted to authorised people. If your equipment supports it, a separate guest network can help keep different types of use apart. The exact options depend on the router, the installed system, and its configuration.

Do not share the router’s administrator password with customers, and do not use the same confidential credentials for administration and guest access. To create or change network separation, check the available features in the documentation or with the person who manages the installation.

Make guest access easy to understand and manage

Clearly indicate the guest network name and how guests can access it. If you use a QR code, place it in an appropriate area and make sure it does not provide access to administrative settings. Change credentials in line with your establishment’s practices and the features supported by your equipment.

Avoid promising a particular speed or uninterrupted availability without the measurements and commitment to support such a claim. A simple explanation of the available access and how to report a problem is more transparent. Do not ask customers to share personal passwords or sensitive information to troubleshoot their device.

Test coverage in the areas people actually use

Reception may vary from one bedroom to another, between floors and in shared areas. Walk through the important areas with a test device, then observe how stable browsing and everyday activities are. Repeat the check when several people are present: conditions in an occupied property may differ from those in an empty room.

  • Note the room, floor and time when the problem occurs;
  • check whether multiple devices are affected in the same area;
  • distinguish between no Wi-Fi and a Wi-Fi connection with no Internet access;
  • check whether the router or an access point has restarted or is showing an unusual indicator light.

Preparing for the next steps if there’s an outage

A brief record of the affected areas, devices, times, and indicator lights can help distinguish a coverage problem from a broader outage. If the issue is mainly affecting a few bedrooms, see our guide to weak Wi-Fi in certain rooms of a riad. If it affects the whole property, also note the router’s status and any messages from the operator.

These general guidelines do not replace your equipment's manual or your provider's instructions. The WifiUrgence diagnostic covers the agreed-upon installation inside the home.
