Moving a fibre router to another room in Marrakech: what to check before changing the wiring
Want to move your router from the living room to a home office, or out of a bedroom? Before buying a longer cable or unplugging anything, identify how it connects to the fibre entry point and assess the route to the new room. Moving the router, relocating the fibre wall socket (PTO), and providing an Ethernet connection to another room are different jobs.
This guide helps you prepare a request for an indoor wiring assessment in Marrakech and the surrounding area. It focuses on relocation feasibility and connections, rather than choosing the best position for Wi-Fi coverage. To learn what can be checked, see the in-home fibre diagnostic service.
What do you actually want to move?
The router or internet box manages your home network and usually broadcasts Wi-Fi. Depending on the model and installation, it receives fibre directly or connects to another device using Ethernet.
The PTO is the fibre termination point inside the property, not an ordinary network socket. Moving the router does not automatically require moving this socket.
The ONT converts the optical connection into a network connection. It may be separate or integrated into the router. That is why the device model and its connections matter more than simply saying “I have fibre”.
What should be checked before buying a cable?
Start with an overview of the devices and visible connections, without unplugging them. Does the optical cable enter the router itself or a separate ONT? What are the model numbers? Are a telephone or other devices connected to the router that must remain in use?
Next, assess the actual cable route to the destination: around doorways, through corners, and past furniture that could trap the cable. Straight-line distance is not enough to establish the required length or whether the route is suitable. The destination also needs appropriate power and a stable, ventilated position for the equipment.
An RJ45 wall socket in the office is not necessarily connected to the router or suitable for the intended link. Its other end and purpose need to be identified: a socket’s presence does not remove the need to check its connection.
Could the fibre entry point stay where it is?
Sometimes the real requirement is to bring connectivity to a room, not to move every device. Depending on the equipment and provider instructions, an existing Ethernet link or a wired access point may be worth assessing without relocating the fibre termination.
Where an ONT is separate, the network link between it and the router may be one option to examine. This does not automatically apply to a router receiving fibre directly. It also does not mean an arbitrary ONT can be added or substituted without the provider’s agreement.
An access point provides Wi-Fi from a wired network connection, with configuration varying by model. Its suitability can be assessed as part of Wi-Fi and Mesh optimisation. This is a technical option to consider, not a recommendation to buy equipment or a promise that WiFi Urgence supplies or installs it.
When should you stop moving things?
Do not continue if moving the device pulls on the optical cable, traps it behind furniture, requires opening the PTO, or involves changing an unknown cable route. Never look into optical connectors, and do not disconnect them just to take photographs. Avoid pinching or crushing the cable and protect connectors from dust. Follow your equipment documentation and provider’s guidance rather than assuming every device uses the same connections.
WiFi Urgence offers PTO/OAT relocation inside the home. You can contact WiFi Urgence to request PTO/OAT relocation and agree on the intended position, work and terms before the visit proceeds. If the project requires extending cables or adding another socket, the work, equipment and cost are specified in the agreement rather than assumed to be included. If the connection already has a fault, record it before making changes so the existing problem is not confused with the effects of relocation.
How can you request a technician in Marrakech?
Instead of simply writing “I need my router moved”, send a description that makes the assessment request clear:
I would like to check whether my fibre router can be moved from the living room to the office, without assuming the PTO must be relocated. The property is in [neighbourhood/area], the provider is [name], and the device model is [model]. Internet currently works / the current problem is: […]. Could you confirm the diagnostic scope, an appointment and the terms?
If useful, include general photographs of the visible connections and intended destination. Hide the Wi-Fi password and provider account information. Ask for appointment confirmation: searching for “home WiFi technician Marrakech” does not establish immediate or same-day availability.
What can WiFi Urgence help with?
WiFi Urgence offers indoor installation diagnosis and advice, PTO/OAT relocation and maintenance in Marrakech and the surrounding area, within the agreed scope. To understand fault-related checks before requesting maintenance, see the fibre and Wi-Fi troubleshooting page. For a general introduction, you can also visit the WiFi Urgence homepage.
Relocation or maintenance work, its terms and cost are agreed before work begins; a diagnostic visit does not mean that all work or equipment is automatically included. The service does not cover the provider’s external network, and any provider-owned equipment remains subject to the applicable permissions and instructions. Moving an internet subscription to a different address is another matter for your provider, whichever provider you use.
The key point: before asking “Which cable should I buy?”, identify the existing connection and have the proposed route checked. This helps you choose an appropriate next step without changing connections whose purpose is unclear.
